Jowyn Wong, known in the automotive world as Mr. Wyn, is the creative force behind some of the most striking hypercars on the market today. With a lifelong passion for high-performance vehicles and a natural talent for design, Jowyn’s journey from sketching cars to creating masterpieces like the Apollo IE is nothing short of extraordinary.
From a young age, Jowyn was immersed in the world of automobiles. “I was always sketching, whether it’d be sketching animals, anime, nature, and of course cars,” he recalls. His family’s deep-rooted interest in cars further fueled his passion, leading him to merge his artistic talents with his love for high-performance vehicles. This fusion of interests set the stage for his remarkable career in car design.
Jowyn’s work with Apollo stands as a testament to his innovative spirit. “I was able to let loose,” he explains. “I’ve never been the type to follow rules or trends, especially in car design or in the car design community.” His approach to the Apollo IE was groundbreaking, drawing inspiration from LMP1 racing cars and the aerodynamic principles observed in apex predators. “The Apollo IE features a large amount of inspiration from LMP1 cars and principles of nature’s design,” he elaborates. “It has many fins, aggressive lines, and a huge wing, and it’s highly sculpted for aerodynamic performance.” Jowyn’s fearless execution of his vision, incorporating bold design elements like wings and aggressive creases, has set a new standard in hypercar design, influencing modern vehicles across the industry.

From an early age, Jowyn was captivated by cars, a fascination fueled by his family’s enthusiasm for high-performance vehicles. “As far back as I can remember, I was always sketching—whether it’d be sketching animals, anime, nature, and of course cars,” he reflects. This early immersion in the world of high-performance cars naturally led him to pursue a career in supercar design, where he has made significant strides.
Jowyn’s career took off with his role at McLaren in 2012, where he worked alongside Frank Stephenson on groundbreaking projects like the P1, 650S, and 570S. “My first major opportunity was at McLaren, where I worked on projects such as the P1, 650S, and 570S,” he explains. This experience laid the groundwork for his future successes, allowing him to refine his design skills and innovate within the hypercar sector. His work on the Apollo IE, characterized by aggressive lines and aerodynamic features, exemplifies his fearless approach to design. “The Apollo IE features a large amount of inspiration from LMP1 cars and principles of nature’s design,” he notes, showcasing his commitment to pushing the boundaries of conventional design.
A standout project in Jowyn’s portfolio is the De Tomaso P72, a modern reinterpretation of the classic De Tomaso Pantera. “Design is the silent ambassador for your brand,” Jowyn asserts, emphasizing his belief in design as a key communicator of brand identity. The P72 blends elements of the original Pantera with contemporary design refinements, maintaining the brand’s legacy while introducing innovative features. “One of the pillars of my design strategy is to introduce ways to supplement a brand’s signature while carefully preserving its identity,” Jowyn explains. His work on the P72 illustrates his ability to balance historical respect with modern innovation, solidifying his role as a leading figure in hypercar design.
HYPERCAR DESIGN IDEAS
Designing a supercar comes with its own set of significant challenges, primarily due to stringent regulations. “The biggest challenge is largely on the regulation,” Jowyn notes. “It’s like designing in a box, within a box, within a box.” Navigating these regulatory constraints requires both experience and adaptability. Jowyn emphasizes the importance of having a skilled team to realize design intentions while overcoming the hurdles posed by these regulations. “You need to be able to have a great team to execute all the intentions to realize the design fully, but at the same time have the ability to adapt and navigate through all the challenges,” he says. For him, these obstacles are opportunities to enhance the design and improve the overall product.
Despite these challenges, Jowyn Wong views each hurdle as a chance to refine his craft. “I just see this as an excuse to make the design better and the overall product better resolved,” he explains. His ability to turn constraints into creative opportunities is a testament to his innovative approach and dedication to supercar design. Jowyn’s insights underscore the delicate balance between artistic vision and technical execution, essential for producing the next generation of extraordinary hypercars.
Q: What do you think of the future of Automotive?
“The automotive landscape is constantly evolving,” Jowyn Wong says. “Electronification is the buzzword these days, and I fully embrace it. I can’t wait to work on an EV platform that is truly radical.” He anticipates significant disruption from Chinese automotive brands as they enter the Western market, offering high-quality vehicles at lower prices. “I expect massive disruption from China’s brands once they’ve become mainstream and enter the Western world at fractions of the prices but double the quality and standard features,” Wong predicts. Despite these changes, he remains confident about the enduring appeal of hypercars. “The good news is, hypercars will always be here to stay!”
Q: Tell us your experience working with Apollo, how did you create such a monster of a car?
Wong describes his work with Apollo as an opportunity to break conventional design barriers. “I was able to let loose. I’ve never been the type to follow rules or trends, especially in car design,” he explains. Wong’s fearless approach to design involved realizing his full vision, leading to modern hypercars incorporating similar elements. “I wasn’t afraid to realize the entirety of what I had envisioned, with wings, fins, aggressive creases, etc. Now every other modern hypercar features these similar elements of design,” he notes.
